Reasons for a Federal Assessment

On May 24, 2007, it was determined that an environmental assessment was required in relation to the project because the Parks Canada Agency considered taking action in relation to subsection 18(1) of the National Parks General Regulations.

Project Description (as posted in the Notice of Commencement)

Sunshine Village ski area in Banff National Park has applied to Parks Canada for a water permit. This will allow Sunshine Village to withdraw and/or divert a supply of water from Sunshine Creek and an existing well for commercial purposes. The water permit is valid for a 10 year period. Updated water use and environmental monitoring will be conditions of the water permit.

Final Decision

A decision was taken on August 10, 2007 and was that the authority may exercise any power or perform any duty or function with respect to the project because, after taking into consideration the screening report and taking into account the implementation of appropriate mitigation measures, the authority is of the opinion that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
